From Rocks to Pots

In celebration of Earth Day I wanted to share with you the art of foraging for natural products used in pottery. From clay to glazes mother earth does nothing but give to us. It is good to be reminded that as renters of this planet, we need to respect the management of our air to our soil.

One of our favorite Potters here in Antigonish, Nova Scotia shows how the earth is more than a walking path or driveway.

Jeanmichel is originally from Montreal, Quebec, and moved here in 2021, in lockdown from Eastern Washington State with his wife and 2 kids, 6 and 8. Now living in Antigonish is creating and experimenting with the tools he has at his feet.

One of Jeanmichel’s hobbies is foraging natural products around him to use for pottery. He hopes to offer workshops at The Arts House taking students out into the environment and teaching his skills to those interested in the process.

Ceramics from local materials. Foraged and processed by hand. Made in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, home of the Mi’kmaq people.

Here is a quick review of the process. First, the rocks are collected and crushed into dirt is soaked in water to separate the sand and the pebbles from the clay product. Next, the clay dirt is sifted through several levels of sieves, to get a fine enough product to use for clay.

The byproducts of the sand and pebbles are used for creating unique glazes that can change colors depending on the temperature they are fired at in the kiln. Every time Jeanmichel opens the kiln it is a surprise. Once the testing is done with the batch of collected rocks he can then have a test sample to choose for his next project.

Jeanmichel enjoys the imperfections of the clay with the unknown

There is so much more to share about this form of art and how it brings you closer to the earth, but for now the awareness of the gift Mother Earth gives is something to celebrate!

Workshops we hope to offer soon.

Larissa is also one of the Arts House moderators at the Open Studio sessions.

We are lucky to have her with us at The Arts House.

Andrea (Andy) Pumphrey

Visual Arts teacher (Paint night! coming soon)

Some of you know Andy from the Thursday morning “Open Studio Live Drawing” sessions at The Arts House, Andy also has taught fun “Adult Paint and Sip” events, and "Plain Air” day trips.  She is truly a woman of many talents and accomplishments.

Andrea (Andy) is an artist living in Antigonish, NS, Canada. The bulk of her work consists of graphite drawings, acrylic paintings, and pieces that combine 3D elements with a 2D image.

Although she doesn't hold a formal Fine Arts degree she hesitates to call herself a 'self-taught' artist as she has learned so much from books, videos, and workshops given by other artists.

Her common goal in most of her work is to produce something that will make the viewer smile.

Andy Accepts commissions for pencil drawings and acrylic paintings. Other work she can do, she also creates life-size custom photo stand-ins for clients.  She has commissioned work in private and corporate collections across Canada and abroad.

Sherry Neville-MacLean

Pottery teacher

Sherry loves to play with clay because it helps her find balance.  Another way she tries to enjoy life, is through collecting of mugs from other amazing potters.

One of the first pottery pieces Sherry bought (as an adult) was a mug by Yvonne Lynch, and it’s a mug Sherry still has in her cherished coffee cup collection.

Other potters who inspire Sherry, and have made their way into the cherished coffee cup collection are Robert McMillan, Monique Duclos, and Sarah Bonnyman - as well as Baden Creek Pottery.

Sherry is currently on the hunt for pieces from Finkle Pottery and Elizabeth Burtt Pottery (fingers crossed).

Life is short. Let’s enjoy the coffee experience with good quality coffee in good looking mugs while having a good morning conversation.

Sherry loves to play with clay as it helps her find balance – whether the balance is obtained by temporarily forgetting dreaded tasks like housework OR being able to process other aspects of her life while working with clay.
Some of her pieces are seen here…

She has learned plenty under some greats like Fran, Pat, and Fenn, but she still feels she has much yet to learn.

Sherry believes her love for pottery is also connected to fond memories of being with lots of wonderful women in her life – her mom, her aunt, and many of their friends – meeting regularly to enjoy each other’s company and ceramics in the basement of one of Sherry’s childhood homes.

Fran Guinnane

pottery teacher

Fran has taken pottery classes wherever she could find them since 2014 and is currently taking courses at St. FX (now that she is “mature enough” says Fran).

She considers herself a hobby potter gone wild and
the more she learns, the more she realizes she needs to learn.

Frann has a studio in Georgeville where she’s “living the dream” with gardens, chickens, and guineas close to the shore.  Because she doesn’t want her art to become a “job” she chooses not to have a presence on social media, but does sell at the Farmers Market in Antigonish a few times a year to “support her habit”.

Her first love is hand-building, with a focus on functional pieces.
She enjoys sharing her knowledge and spreading the joy that pottery brings.

She’s been lucky to have friends and family with talent to encourage and mentor her as she’s focused on this current chapter of her life.

We are so lucky to have her as one of our talented Art Teachers here at The Arts House, located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Canada!

We asked Fran who are the artists that inspire her.
Answer: “Taylor Sijan, Lisa Naples & Ann Ruel”

Take a class today from Fran and see her passion in her teaching and spirit.

Fenn Martin (Mud Puppy)

pottery teacher

Fenn Martin’s clay practice is finding creative parallels in professional ceramic-based and contemporary small-scale farming practices.

Immersed in traditions of labour and small-scale farming, Martin imbues a tradesperson’s Do-It-Yourself (DIY) approach into large-scale ceramic installations.

Strongly influenced by his hometown, Antigonish Nova Scotia’s remarkable history of forming grassroots co-operatives, his explorations of small-scale agrarian labour extend parallels into his fine arts discourse.

Currently, his practice employs large, extruded forms exploring clay as an interspecies host to interface with microbial and fungal communities

Through outdoor raw clay installations of tubal structures, Martin finds many fertile convergences of arts, sciences, and stewardship.

Martin has several permanent commissions in Nova Scotia, has completed a Master of Fine Art (MFA) in Craft Media at Alberta University of the Arts (AUA), Calgary, Alberta and is currently a sessional instructor at ST FX.

We are so lucky to have him as one of our talented Art Teachers here at The Arts House, located in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. Canada!

If the clay it isn’t entered yet, its because you need to growl at it!

Vic Cicanski  Canadian Prairies ceramic sculptor who uniquely combines farming and art.
