The Arts House

The Arts House, located in the old Antigonish tourist information centre (next to Boston Pizza), is being opened as a place to experience all things arts related. For the months of July and August 2018, we are running children’s art and pottery classes. All courses are taught by experienced art instructors. The children will receive a first class week of lessons.

The Arts House is going to be a gathering place for all of those people who are passionate about creating and those who are learning how to create. The dream is to have a home for the arts in our community that will continue to grow in years to come.

We will be posting more opportunities for lessons and space rental in the upcoming weeks, stay tuned for more information.

Nancy Turniawan is an artist with 30 years teaching experience in Visual Arts. Problem solving is part of the fun. Nancy's graphic design background makes it possible to teach problem solving using a wide variety of materials.

Cindy McPherson, a Nova Scotia visual artist and educator, works in various media. Much of the inspiration for her artwork comes from living in England and from her travels throughout Europe and North Africa as well as from learning about different cultures and their interconnectedness. She has participated in numerous group exhibits within Nova Scotia. Her work can be found in private businesses in Nova Scotia and in private collections within Canada and abroad.

Nancy learned to draw realistically at the age of 17 when she went to study art. Before that, she drew in symbols. Now, she combines seeing and drawing as quiet reflection on the beautiful forms and patterns of nature. But when her imagination takes flight, she returns to her symbols of nature to express herself.

During the week, we will learn the mechanics of seeing, and we will practice diligently to record our studies of nature. We will also use our imaginations to develop these studies into works of joy and fun. Different drawing materials and papers will be used. On Friday, students will finish their art pieces, will prepare their artwork for display, and will write artist statements. At pick up time, parents/family are asked to stay to enjoy the display of art.

On Friday, students will finish their art pieces, will prepare their artwork for display, and will write artist statements. At pick up time, parents/family are asked to stay to enjoy the display of art.

Artists are also scientists, as they like to study how things form into plants, animals. Artists have learned to copy the many shapes and forms that they see in nature, using clay, plant fibres, and natural glues and pigments.

During the week we will study together by observing, sketching, and sharing. Then, each artist will recreate a favourite form, texture, or pattern in their studies using printmaking, weaving and sculpture techniques. On Friday, students will finish their art pieces, will prepare their artwork for display, and will write artist statements. At pick up time, parents/family are asked to stay to enjoy the display of art.

The class will start out with students learning a little bit of the history of how wool and cloth are dyed then they will draw a rough sketch of what they want their final picture to look like. Once this is done, the students will start using the wool and a felting needle to create their felted picture. At the end of the week, each student will have a lovely completed felted picture to take home.

After exploring the concept of positive and negative space as well as design, the students will create two pictures based upon what they have learned.
